Train and Fjord Day Trip

Today we did Norway in a Nutshell, a tour to the fjords that's not really a tour. It's a cleverly connected collection of public transportation -- three trains, a bus and a ferry -- to make a beautiful day trip from Bergen through part of a fjord.

The day was overcast and rainy, with lots of fog. We even got snowed on. Hart nearly froze taking pictures from the ferry -- he was soaked in no time and his hands were icy. (I stayed inside, drinking hot chocolate while looking out the window.) Not ideal conditions for viewing scenery, but I've no complaints. It was all stunning.

My favorite part was the train back to Bergen at the end of the day. This segment is truly regarded as transportation; the scenery was barely mentioned. I stared open-mouthed out the window for an hour at the river cutting through the valleys, waterfalls springing up everywhere, and the small villages strewn throughout the landscape. Unfortunately, the glimpses were too short for photos. Hart didn't even see them -- by the time he looked we'd gone past what I was trying to show him.

All we have planned for tomorrow is to go to breakfast and then go back to sleep. We'll explore Bergen some more, but I imagine we'll laze around our hotel quite a bit, too. Lots of rain is in the forecast.

We'll spend all Friday on the train, ending up in Stockholm at 10 p.m. We'll be there four full days. I'm really, really, really looking forward to it.
