Mmm... ANZAC Biscuits
When we first moved here, there was an Australian family in living our neighborhood as part of an exchange program. The school that their daughters attended asked students to raise money by asking neighbors for it. The girls were uncomfortable about this, so they sold ANZAC biscuits (cookies) to raise money and teach people a little bit about Australia. The story of these delicious cookies, according to www.aussieslang.com:
The cookies were delicious and we bought some every time we went to a grocery store in New Zealand. Walking through Safeway today, I saw packages of them on an end rack, so I had to buy some. If you see some at your local grocery store, I suggest buying a package. They're tasty. Although they're not as tasty as the homemade ones that we bought from the Australian girls. There are a few theories on the origins of ANZAC [which stand for Australia New Zealand Army Corp] biscuits but it is certain that they came about during the First World War, around 1915. Some say that they started as biscuits made by the troops in the trenches with provisions they had at hand to relieve the boredom of their battle rations. And some say they came about due to resourceful of the women on the "home front" in an endeavour to make a treat for their loved ones that would survive the long journey by post to the war front.
